REFERENCE JESUS REVEALED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
Exodus 13:21, 23:20-23, I Corinthians 10:4 [Exodus 13:21] And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: [23:20] Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. [23:21] Beware of him, and obey his voice , provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions : for my name is in him . [23:22] But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. [23:23] For mine Angel shall go before thee , and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. [I Corinthians 10:4] And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
Joshua 5:13-15 [5:13] And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? [5:14] And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? [5:15] And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Notice that that this person, who was actually Jesus, did not chide Joshua for worshipping Him.)
Psalms 2:2, Acts 4:26 [Psalms 2:2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed , saying, [Acts 4:26] The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ .
Psalms 2:6-12, Acts 13:33, Hebrews 1:5, 5:5 [2:6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [2:7] I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son ; this day have I begotten thee. [2:8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [2:9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. [2:10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [2:11] Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [2:12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. [Acts 13:33] God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
See above [Hebrews 1:5] For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? [5:5] So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
Psalms 8:4-6, Hebrews 2:6-9 [8:4] What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man , that thou visitest him? [8:5] For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. [8:6] Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: [Hebrews 2:6] But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man , that thou visitest him? [2:7] Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: [2:8] Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. [2:9] But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Psalms 16:8-11, Acts 2:25-27, 2:31, 13:35, 37 [Psalms 16:8] I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. [16:9] Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. [16:10] For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. [16:11] Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. [Acts 2:25] For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: [2:26] Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: [2:27] Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. [2:28] Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
See above [2:31] He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. [13:35] Wherefore he saith also in another psal m, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. [13:37] But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
Psalms 22:1, Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34 [Psalms 22:1] My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? [Matthew 27:46] And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [Mark 15:34] And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Psalms 22:7, 109:25, Matthew 27:39 [Psalms 22:7] All they that see me laugh me to scorn : they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, [109:25] I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads. [Matthew 27:39] And they that passed by reviled him , wagging their heads ,
Psalms 22:8, Matthew 27:43 [Psalms 22:8] He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him , seeing he delighted in him.: [Matthew 27:43] He trusted in God; let him deliver him now , if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
Psalms 22:15, John 19:28 [Psalms 22:15] My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws ; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. [John 19:28] After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
Psalms 22:16, John 19:34-37, 20:25-28 [Psalms 22:16] For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. [John 19:34] But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. [19:35] And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. [19:36] For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. [19:37] And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. [20:25] The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. [20:26] And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
See above [John 20:27] Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. [20:28] And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.
Psalms 22:18, Matthew 27:35, Mark 15:24, Luke 23:34, John 19:23-24 [Psalms 22:18] They parted my garments among hem, and cast lots upon my vesture. [Matthew 27:35] And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. [Mark 15:24] And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. [Luke 23:34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. [John 19:23] Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. [19:24] They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
Psalms 22:22, Hebrews 2:12 [Psalms 22:22] I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. [Hebrews 2:12] Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
Psalms 34:20, John 19:31-36 [Psalms 34:20] He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. [John 19:31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. [19:32] Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. [19:33] But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs : [19:34] But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. [19:35] And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. [19:36] For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
Psalms 35:11, Mark 14:55-56 [Psalms 35:11] False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. [Mark 14:55] And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. [14:56] For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
Psalms 40:6-8, Hebrews 10:5-9 [Psalms 40:6] Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. [40:7] Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, [40:8] I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. [Hebrews 10:5] Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: [10:6] In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. [10:7] Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me ,) to do thy will, O God. [10:8] Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; [10:9] Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Psalms 41:9, John 13:18 [Psalms 41:9] Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his hand against me. [John 13:18] I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psalms 45:6-7, Hebrews 1:8-9 [Psalms 45:6] Thy throne, O God , is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. [45:7] Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. [Hebrews 1:8] But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. [1:9] Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Psalms 68:18, Ephesians 4:8 [Psalms 68:18] Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them. [Ephesians 4:8] Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Psalms 69:4, John 15:23-25 [Psalms 69:4] They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away. [John 15:23] He that hateth me hateth my Father also. [15:24] If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. [15:25] But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
Psalms 69:9, John 2:17, Romans 15:3 [Psalms 69:9] For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. [John 2:17] And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. [Romans 15:3] For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
Psalms 69:21, Matthew 27:34 [Psalms 69:21] They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. [Matthew 27:34] They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
Psalms 89:4, Luke 1:32-33, Acts 13:23 [Psalms 89:4] Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah. [Luke 1:32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [1:33] And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. [Acts 13:23] Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus :
Psalms 91:11-12, Matthew 4:6, Luke 4:10-11 [Psalms 91:11] For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. [91:12] They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. [ Matthew 4:6] And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God , cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. [Luke 4:10] For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: [4:11] And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Psalms 95:7-11, Hebrews 3:7-11,15, 4:3, 5, 7-8 [Psalms 95:7] For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, [95:8] Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: [95:9] When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. [95:10] Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: [95:11] Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. [Hebrews 3:7] Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, [3:8] Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: [3:9] When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. [3:10] Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. [3:11] So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
See above [Hebrews 3:15] While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. [4:3] For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. [4:5] And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. [4:7] Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. [4:8] For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
Psalms 102:25-27, Hebrews 1:8-12 [Psalms 102:25] Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. [102:26] They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: [102:27] But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. [Hebrews 1:8] But unto the Son he saith , Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. [1:9] Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. [1:10] And, Thou, Lord , in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: [1:11] They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; [1:12] And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
Psalms 109:25, Matthew 27:39 [Psalms 109:25] I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads . [Matthew 27:39] And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads ,
Psalms 110:1, Matthew 22:42-45, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:42-43, Acts 2:32-36, Hebrews 1:13, 10:12-13 [Psalms 110:1] The LORD said unto my Lord , Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. [Matthew 22:42] Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. [22:43] He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, [22:44] The LORD said unto my Lord , Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? [22:45] If David then call him Lord , how is he his son? [Mark 12:36] For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord , Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. [Luke 20:42] And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord , Sit thou on my right hand, [20:43] Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. [Acts 2:32] This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. [2:33] Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
See above [2:34] For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord , Sit thou on my right hand, [2:35] Until I make thy foes thy footstool. [2:36] Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ . [Hebrews 1:13] But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? [10:12] But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; [10:13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
Psalms 110:4, Hebrews 5:6, 6:20, 7:21 [Psalms 110:4] The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. [Hebrews 5:6] As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. [6:20] Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. [7:21] (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
Psalms 117:1, Romans 15:8-11 [Psalms 110:4] O Praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. [Romans 15:8] Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: [15:9] And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. [15:10] And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. [15:11] And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
Psalms 118:22-23, Isaiah 8:14, 28:16, Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, Romans 9:33, Ephesians 2:20, I Peter 2:6-7 [Psalms 118:22] The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. [118:23] This is the LORD's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. [Isaiah 8:14] And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. [28:16] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone , a tried stone, a precious corner stone , a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. [Matthew 21:42] Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner : this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes ? [Mark 12:10] And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: [Luke 20:17] And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
See above [Acts 4:11] This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner . [Romans 9:33] As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence : and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. [Ephesians 2:20] And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone ; [1 Peter 2:6] Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. [1 Peter 2:7] Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
Psalms 118:26, Matthew 21:9, 25 [Psalms 118:26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. [Matthew 21:9] And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David : Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. [21:15] And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David ; they were sore displeased,
Psalms 132:11, Acts 2:29-30 [Psalms 132:11] The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne. [Acts 2:29] Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. [2:30] Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; (The Lord God is saying that the second person of the Trinity, Jesus, would sit on the throne of David. Note the special wording in Psalm 132:11.)
Proverbs 8:22-31 [8:22] The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. [8:23] I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. [8:24] When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. [8:25] Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: [8:26] While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. [8:27] When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: [8:28] When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: [8:29] When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: [8:30] Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; [8:31] Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Proverbs 30:4, Ephesians 4:7-10 [Proverbs 30:4] Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, a nd what is his son's name , if thou canst tell? [ Ephesians 4:7] But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. [4:8] Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high , he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. [4:9] (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? [4:10] He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23 [Isaiah 7:14] Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. [Matthew 1:23] Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us .
Isaiah 9:6-7 [9:6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace . [9:7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 10:17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;
